Daddy Lumba Estate Battle Looms: Legal Counsel Warns Against Widow Recognition, Citing Inheritance Rights:

A legal battle is brewing over the estate of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, with legal counsel for his estranged wife, Akosua Serwaa, warning against the recognition of Odo Broni as a widow of the musician.
William Kusi, Akosua Serwaa’s legal representative, stated in an interview with Top Radio on October 9, 2025, that recognizing Odo Broni as a widow would have serious legal ramifications for his client, impacting her inheritance rights and diminishing her rightful entitlement to her late husband’s estate.
Kusi emphasized that under Ghanaian law, particularly when a marriage is contracted under the Ordinance, a man cannot have two legally recognized wives. He asserted that Daddy Lumba’s marriage to Akosua Serwaa was such a union, rendering any suggestion that the musician had another legal wife while still married to Serwaa legally unfounded.
“He is speaking out of ignorance. Under the Ordinance, one cannot marry another. Even if he did, that would mean he was having an affair because the law does not allow a second marriage,” Kusi stated, referring to claims by Kofi Owusu Fosu, the head of Daddy Lumba’s family, that the musician had two wives.
The lawyer clarified that Akosua Serwaa is the only spouse legally recognized, and any other relationship, including that with Odo Broni, cannot be considered a legal marriage. He further argued against calls for his client to allow Odo Broni to be acknowledged as a co-widow for the sake of respect or harmony, stating that doing so would jeopardize Akosua Serwaa’s rightful share of her late husband’s estate.
“It has ramifications when it comes to the distribution of property, so we can’t let that go. Akosua Serwaa was the one he began life with, and she is entitled to part of Lumba’s properties. The law allows her to have an equal share with the children in the matrimonial property and 3/16 of the residue. That portion will be lost if she allows Odo Broni to be recognized as a spouse. That would mean she would be sharing that part with Odo Broni. She deserves everything,” Kusi explained.
The legal dispute has escalated, with Akosua Serwaa filing a court injunction on October 2, 2025, against Kofi Owusu Fosu, Transitions Funeral Home, and Odo Broni. The lawsuit aims to halt the funeral preparations for Daddy Lumba and prevent Odo Broni from presenting herself as the musician’s widow.
Court documents filed by Akosua Serwaa, which surfaced on social media on October 9, 2025, reveal that she is seeking a declaration from the High Court in Kumasi affirming her as the only lawful wife of the late musician.
Daddy Lumba, one of Ghana’s most beloved highlife artists, passed away on July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital, and his burial is scheduled for December 6, 2025, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The legal battle over his estate adds a layer of complexity and sadness to the legacy of the iconic musician.
