Movement for Change’s Solomon Owusu accuses Dr. Zaato of hypocrisy on galamsey fight:

A Senior Communications Member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, has leveled accusations of hypocrisy against Dr. Zaato, alleging that the academician actively worked against efforts to combat illegal mining (“galamsey”) during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) administration.
Speaking on TV3’s KeyPoints, monitored by Newspalacegh.com, Solomon Owusu stated that Dr. Zaato, who has been vocal in criticizing the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s handling of the galamsey issue, previously undermined the University Teachers Association of Ghana’s (UTAG) decision to strike in protest of the environmental damage caused by galamsey.
“Dr. Zaato is now very quick to point fingers at the NDC government concerning galamsey, but we cannot forget his actions when the NPP was in power,” Owusu asserted. “He voted against UTAG’s decision to take a firm stance against galamsey, effectively siding with those who were benefiting from the destruction. This is a clear case of double standards.”
Owusu also elaborated on the need for a more consistent and effective approach to tackling galamsey, independent of which party is in power.
He emphasized the importance of community involvement in monitoring and reporting illegal mining activities. He also called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and harsher penalties for those found guilty of engaging in or facilitating galamsey. He also stressed the need for all Ghanaians to get involved when it comes to the galamsay fight.
Mr. Owusu concluded by urging all stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and community members, to prioritize the protection of Ghana’s environment and resources, regardless of political affiliation. He argued that a united front is essential to effectively combat the galamsey menace and ensure a sustainable future for the country.
