“New Ablekuma North MP not in the Market, stop requesting for her contact”- Speaker Bagbin Jokingly Warns MPs:

Spread the love

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin injected a dose of humor into the swearing-in ceremony of Ewurabena Aubynn, the new National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP for Ablekuma North, on July 22, 2025.

Addressing the House, Speaker Bagbin playfully cautioned Members of Parliament against pursuing romantic interests in the newly sworn-in legislator. “The House is now blessed with a new member, a female, bringing the number of women in the House to 41,” he said. “I saw some of you taking her telephone number. Please, Honourable Members, she is not in the market, so don’t attempt,” Bagbin quipped, eliciting laughter from the House.

He stated that Aubynn is “off the market,” and that MP’s should refrain from making romantic advances towards her.

The swearing-in took place following a tense parliamentary rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency. The Minority Caucus staged a walkout prior to the ceremony after Speaker Bagbin denied their request to deliver a statement.

Aubynn’s victory and subsequent swearing-in mark the end of a protracted electoral process. The initial December 2024 election results were nullified by the Electoral Commission (EC) due to widespread irregularities.

The rerun, conducted earlier this month across 19 polling stations, saw Aubynn narrowly defeat the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie. Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, while Afriyie received 33,881. The decision to hold a rerun followed concerns over unsigned result forms, discrepancies in vote tallies, and procedural violations during the initial collation process
