Mahama orders immediate food distribution to Senior High Schools amid shortage controversies:

President John Mahama has responded decisively to growing concerns about food shortages in Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country, directing the immediate distribution of food supplies.
Addressing the nation during a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra on Sunday, January 12, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the difficulties in providing adequate meals to students. He then announced swift measures to address the crisis, stating, “We have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools.”
As an immediate solution, President Mahama has instructed the Chief of Staff to collaborate with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food supplies currently stored in warehouses in Tema. These supplies, originally imported to address past drought conditions, will be redirected to ensure that students receive the nutrition they need and to prevent any interruption to their education.
President Mahama also stressed his commitment to upholding the Free SHS policy and preventing logistical issues from hindering students’ access to education. This action follows earlier warnings from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) about the severity of the food shortages, which led to appeals for parents to supplement their children’s meals.
The government’s rapid response seeks to alleviate the burden on both parents and school administrations and ensure that students’ nutritional needs are met.
