Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin has made history by securing a second consecutive term as Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, becoming only the second person to do so after Justice D.F. Annan, who served from 1993-1997 and then to 2001. Bagbin, who served as Speaker from 2021 to 2024, is set to lead the ninth parliament from 2025 to 2028.

His re-election solidifies his position as a key figure in Ghanaian politics and a testament to his ability to navigate the complexities of the legislature.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Bagbin expressed profound gratitude to President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the NDC leadership for the trust placed in him by endorsing his candidacy.

He also acknowledged the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Torkonu, for administering his oath of office as the ninth Speaker of Parliament. He extended his appreciation to the parliamentarians and all members present for their overwhelming support and endorsement.

Bagbin, a seasoned politician with an impressive seven terms as a Member of Parliament, emphasized his wealth of experience. Having presided over the challenging eighth parliament, known for its ‘hung’ composition, he pledged to leverage his expertise to ensure the success of the ninth parliament for the betterment of the nation.

He stated that his immediate duties would be to administer the oath of office to the newly elected members of parliament and then preside over the election of the two Deputy Speakers, following the standing orders of the House.

Bagbin called for active engagement with the public as a means to strengthen the working of the parliament and to hold it accountable as a means of ensuring that the country can have a better government.
