The Mayor of Kumasi, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, aka King Zuba has issued an impassioned plea to residents of the city and Ghanaians nationwide, urging them to abandon the destructive practice of dumping refuse into gutters.

He stressed that this irresponsible behaviour significantly drains the Assembly’s limited financial resources, diverting funds that could otherwise be allocated to crucial development projects such as improving educational infrastructure.

Speaking at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the Eighth Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, held on Monday, October 27, 2025, to approve the 2026 budget, Mayor Ofori Agyemang Boadi, also known as King Zuba, expressed deep concern over Kumasi’s persistent sanitation challenges. He noted that despite ongoing interventions, a considerable number of residents continue to dispose of waste indiscriminately, particularly during rainfall. This habit invariably leads to choked drains, severe flooding, and significant health hazards.

The Mayor revealed the staggering financial burden imposed by such actions, stating that the Assembly spends millions of cedis annually to evacuate refuse and desilt drains. He cited a recent operation in Asokwa where the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) incurred a cost of GH¢230,000 to clear piled-up waste in just three days.

“We could achieve more if residents stopped dumping refuse into gutters and supported the Assembly’s efforts,” the Mayor lamented, describing the situation as worrying and calling for a fundamental shift in public attitude. He emphasized that the city’s development is being severely hampered by these entirely preventable actions.

Furthermore, Mayor Ofori Agyemang Boadi issued a stern warning, indicating that the Assembly would not hesitate to implement punitive measures against individuals who flout sanitation bye-laws. He confirmed that enforcement teams would be deployed to ensure strict compliance and maintain the city’s cleanliness.

Concluding his appeal, the Mayor reminded residents that maintaining a clean Kumasi is a shared responsibility. “It is not only the duty of the Assembly, but every citizen who wants to see Kumasi become a clean, safe, and modern city must play their part,” he affirmed.
