A new era of digital learning is dawning for students in Ghana’s Northern Region. The MTN Ghana Foundation and the University for Development Studies (UDS) have broken ground on a GHS 9.7 million Student Resource Centre at the UDS Tamale campus. The state-of-the-art facility aims to bridge the digital skills gap and prepare students for the demands of the modern economy, with a focus on STEM education and artificial intelligence.

The center, slated for completion in eight months, will provide UDS students and other learners in the region with access to cutting-edge technology and training, including:

• A fully equipped computer lab featuring 70 laptops, robotics equipment, and video conferencing capabilities, linked to the UDS Nyankpala Campus.

• Access to courses and learning materials through the MTN Skills Academy platform.

• Modern, collaborative digital learning spaces designed to foster innovation.

• Opportunities for non-UDS students to enroll and benefit from digital skills training programs.

Robert Kuzoe, Senior Manager of the MTN Ghana Foundation, emphasized the importance of the project in addressing youth unemployment and capitalizing on the potential of Ghana’s young population. “We are laying the foundation for a future where Ghana’s youth are equipped to lead in the digital age. This center will empower them to become creators, innovators, and leaders in the digital economy,” Kuzoe stated at the sod-cutting ceremony. He cited Ghana’s internet penetration rate of 69.8% and government initiatives as positive but said more needs to be done.

Professor Muniru Alhassan, Dean of the UDS Nyankpala Campus, expressed his gratitude, describing the center as a “one-stop hub for nurturing both technical and social intelligence.” He added, “This facility provides our students with the competitive edge needed to blend theory with practice and meet job market demands.”

The project aligns with the MTN Ghana Foundation’s commitment to education and its ongoing efforts to enhance capacity building and improve learning opportunities for students and educators across Ghana.
