Former Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has formally announced her candidacy for the General Secretary position of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). The declaration came via a Facebook post on Monday, October 20, 2025, coinciding with her birthday.

Owusu-Ekuful called upon NPP supporters nationwide to rally behind her campaign to revitalize and reorganize the party in preparation for the 2028 general elections. She described herself as “nurtured, proven, and prepared” to lead the NPP’s restructuring efforts.

“On this day of my birth, Patriots, I come before you… to join you on this collective journey to rescue our beloved country from this clueless, insensitive, and glaringly incompetent government,” she stated in her Facebook post. “I come to you in all humility, to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary.”

Owusu-Ekuful urged party members to remain optimistic, framing the NPP’s current challenges as a necessary phase of self-reflection and renewal. She expressed confidence that the party would overcome its setbacks and emerge stronger, drawing an analogy to the mythical Phoenix rising from the ashes. “Scathed, we refuse to be burnt, and in the unlikely circumstance that we set ourselves in a blazing inferno we will rise. It will shape us, mould us, and like the Phoenix, we will rise and be ready,” she asserted.

The former minister also criticized the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC), denouncing it as a “caretaker government” that seized power through “deceit and unfulfilled promises.” She pledged to restore unity and confidence within the NPP, emphasizing the need to rebuild the party from the grassroots level to regain power in 2028.

“From the polling stations, through to the electoral areas, constituencies, and regions to the top, we will restore confidence in our party and unity amongst ourselves,” Owusu-Ekuful declared. She concluded her announcement with a rallying call for unity, stating, “Patriots, join me, let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, as well as the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”
