A 32-year-old man, Akoto Nelson, has been arrested for allegedly impersonating a police officer in an attempt to gain free entry to Shatta Wale’s concert held last Saturday at the Black Star Square in Accra.

Nelson, dressed in a full police uniform with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), raised suspicion among officers providing security at the event. Upon questioning, he admitted to not being a member of the Ghana Police Service.

According to a police statement, Nelson confessed that he impersonated an officer to avoid paying the entry fee, claiming he could not afford it. He further revealed that he obtained the uniform and police accoutrements in 2022 from a deceased Chief Inspector identified as Gyasi.

A search of Nelson’s residence in Taifa-Ashaiman led to the discovery of several items, which have been retained as exhibits. These include a toy P99 pistol, pepper spray, two ZTE mini phones, a pepper spray pouch, a ZTE charger, a Xinfa cutter knife, various complimentary cards, a voter ID bearing the name Akoto Nelson Elikem, and a birth certificate with the name Nelson Akoto.

Preliminary investigations identified Nelson as a security guard and messenger at a private company. He is currently in police custody and will be arraigned before court upon completion of investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and cautioned the public against impersonation, emphasizing that such offenses will be vigorously prosecuted.
