Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a presidential hopeful for the 2028 elections, is urging the party’s leadership to organize a debate among the candidates vying for the presidential nomination. Agyepong believes such a debate would better inform delegates’ choices and promote a values-driven campaign centered on substantive national issues.

Mr. Agyepong, who previously served as Press Secretary to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, believes a formal debate would allow delegates to effectively assess each candidate’s vision for Ghana and the future direction of the NPP.

“Let’s have a proper debate. Let’s elevate the discourse. That’s what’s important,” he stated.

Agyepong suggests that by participating in a debate, presidential candidates will shift the focus away from simple popularity contests and towards detailed discussions of ideas and policies, ultimately fostering greater unity and cohesion within the party.

He opined that by making the contest about ideas and views on pressing national issues, the current “poisoned” political atmosphere within the party could be significantly improved.
