The Kumasi City Market Limited is implementing strict fire safety regulations at the Kejetia Market, including a ban on wooden structures and open cooking, according to Market Manager Ernest Afayam

The move aims to protect the multi-million dollar facility and ensure the safety of all occupants.

“It is absolutely forbidden to bring any wooden structures into the building,” Afayam stated in an interview with the media. “We understand that in the event of a fire outbreak, wooden structures are highly vulnerable, posing a significant risk.”

Open cooking and cooking within stores are also strictly prohibited. Afayam clarified that cooking is only permitted in the designated canteens on the first and second floors.

“We have informed all market participants, both buyers and sellers, that no one is allowed to cook food inside the facility,” he said. “Anyone caught violating this rule will be sanctioned and potentially barred from trading in the market.”

The market management emphasizes that these measures are crucial to safeguarding the significant investment and the well-being of everyone using the market.

“We have a responsibility to ensure the facility is fully protected, and we cannot afford to take any risks,” Afayam concluded. “Therefore, we are committed to rigorously enforcing these fire safety regulations.”
