The Kumasi High Court has adjourned the case concerning the widowhood rites of the late highlife legend, Daddy Lumba to October 28, 2025, leaving the dispute over who has the right to perform the traditional ceremonies unresolved for now.
Akosua Serwaa, who claims to be Daddy Lumba’s only surviving spouse, is seeking a court declaration affirming her sole entitlement to perform the rites. This legal challenge casts a shadow over the planned funeral scheduled for December 6, 2025, at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
During Thursday’s proceedings, lawyers representing the defendants, Kofi Owusu Fosu (head of Lumba’s extended family) and Priscilla Ofori (Odo Broni), challenged Akosua Serwaa’s legal capacity to bring the matter before the court.
In response, Akosua Serwaa’s lawyer, William Kusi, argued that the court should immediately consider their request for an injunction to prevent the defendants from interfering with Akosua Serwaa’s rights.
While the judge adjourned the case, he urged all parties to explore an amicable resolution outside of court. He also stated that should they remain unable to solve this issue outside of the courtroom, the case would be prioritized to assure this is resolved.
Background:
Akosua Serwaa filed suit against Kofi Owusu Fosu and Priscilla Ofori, seeking to prevent them from participating in decisions surrounding Daddy Lumba’s funeral. She also seeks a court order restraining Odo Broni from publicly presenting herself as Daddy Lumba’s surviving wife. Akosua Serwaa maintains that she was legally married to Daddy Lumba until his death on July 26, 2025, and that her children were excluded from the funeral planning process.
She further alleges that Kofi Owusu Fosu informed her she would not be permitted to perform the widowhood rites. In addition, she claims that Priscilla Ofori surfaced after Daddy Lumba’s death, asserting that she was also married to the musician and had children with him.
Akosua Serwaa contends that Kofi Owusu Fosu intends to allow Odo Broni to perform the widowhood rites, which she believes is unlawful as Odo Broni was never legally married to Daddy Lumba. Without court intervention, Akosua Serwaa argues, she will be unjustly denied her rightful place as the only legally recognized spouse of the late Daddy Lumba.
