The Ashanti Regional Council of the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU), affiliated with the Trades Union Congress (TUC), has announced its full support for the national indefinite strike, effective today, Friday, September 19th. The strike will impact TEWU members across technical and public universities, the Ghana Library Authority, and the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB).

Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Emmanuel Abeiku Aggrey, the Industrial Relations Officer for the Ashanti Region, stated that the strike became unavoidable due to the government’s failure to address the long-standing grievances of non-teaching staff, despite the union exhausting all established procedures.

Aggrey emphasized the union’s patience and restraint throughout the process, warning that any attempts to intimidate members would be considered an unfair labor practice. The union had previously issued official notice of the strike on September 8th, citing persistent delays in finalizing and signing conditions of service agreements. Despite numerous engagements and follow-up efforts with management and relevant authorities, no resolution was reached, leaving members frustrated.

The union appealed to the heads of various institutions to respect the decision of the union.

“We are delivering a strong message to our members, particularly in the Ashanti Region, to adhere to this directive,” Aggrey stated. “We also urge the heads of the various institutions to immediately cease any intimidation of our members.”
