An albino man caused a significant stir at Manhyia Palace during the funeral (Doteyie) of the late Asantehemaa by performing acrobatic movements on the ‘Bodware’, a sacred platform traditionally off-limits to many.

The ‘Bodware’, painted entirely white, is a revered platform where the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, sits during special purification ceremonies. It is also used specifically for purification purposes. Custom holds that women must never step onto the platform, as doing so is believed to invite barrenness and many calamities. Men are allowed to stand on it but must remove their footwear to preserve its sanctity.

Approaching the platform typically demands great caution due to the cultural and spiritual significance attached to it.

In a surprising turn, the albino man boldly climbed the ‘Bodware’ barefooted. He began by raising his head and hand toward the sky, then balanced on one leg for several minutes before sitting cross-legged in a manner resembling an acrobat’s pose.

His unexpected performance attracted a large crowd, eliciting both amazement and concern among onlookers.

While some feared for his safety, others argued that he would not be punished for his actions. One eyewitness, speaking anonymously, explained, “The ‘Bodware’ platform is used in cleansing rituals, and albinos traditionally have roles in such ceremonies. For them, it’s not considered a transgression. However, the platform must always remain sacred and respected.”

Debate continued among bystanders, many of whom expressed worry that the man was risking his life by performing such acts on the revered platform.
