“No fraudster can access your MoMo without your consent, let’s be vigilant” -MTN Northern sector manager addresses MoMo fraud concerns:

In response to rising concerns about mobile money (MoMo) fraud, Mr. Nii Adotey Mingle, MTN Northern Sector General Manager, addressed users directly, emphasizing the importance of protecting their PINs. Responding to customers’ concerns during editors’ forum at the Lancaster Hotel in Kumasi, Mr. Mingle stressed that user vigilance is the key defense against fraudulent activity.
“Your 4-digit PIN is your first and most important line of defense,” Mr. Mingle explained. “If your PIN remains secure, no one can access your account.” He cautioned against “social engineering” tactics used by fraudsters, where they manipulate victims into revealing their PIN through deceptive phone calls or online interactions.
Mr. Mingle strongly advised customers to treat their MoMo PIN with the same level of care as their bank PIN, emphasizing, “Never share your MoMo PIN through any channel – not text, not WhatsApp, not over the phone.”
He also clarified that MTN will only contact customers regarding MoMo issues from the number 0244300000. “If you receive a call from any other number claiming to be about your MoMo account, please disregard it. It is likely a fraud attempt,” he cautioned.
Mr. Mingle’s comments come amid ongoing efforts by MTN to combat MoMo fraud and protect its customers. He reiterated the company’s commitment to providing a secure platform for financial transactions, while emphasizing the responsibility of users to safeguard their personal information.
The manager stressed the importance of customers keeping their PIN private, adding “that way you prevent fraudsters from accessing your account”.
