A group of journalists investigating environmental issues, particularly galamsey, have appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to sack Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) found involved in illegal mining activities.

The journalists gathered intelligence from various mining regions, including Ashanti, Central, Western, Western North, Ahafo, and Bono. Their findings revealed that some MMDCEs, particularly those from the NDC party, were already engaged in galamsey before their appointments.

Residents and indigenous people in mining areas disclosed that some NDC constituency executives, now MMDCEs, own galamsey sites, which is reportedly an open secret known to security agencies.

The journalists witnessed galamsey sites that seemed to be “no-go” areas for anti-galamsey task forces. State security officers expressed frustration that their reports on illegal mining activities often go unaddressed.

The journalists are appealing to President Mahama to take strict action against MMDCEs involved in galamsey, citing concrete evidence. They hope this will serve as a deterrent to other appointees in his government.
