Ashanti Regional GPRTU Chairman orders members on 15% fare reduction, seeks government enforcement on others:

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, Alhaji Somaila Boakye, has directed all commercial drivers in the Ashanti Region and beyond to strictly comply with the newly announced 15 percent reduction in transport fares, effective Saturday, May 24, 2025.
The directive follows instructions from national transport authorities and other key stakeholders mandating the fare reduction across the country.
Addressing the media alongside his regional executives and branch members, Chairman Boakye emphasized that while the prices of some goods and vehicle spare parts have not yet decreased, the union is showing respect to leadership by implementing the fare reduction as instructed.
He assured the public that the GPRTU task force will actively monitor compliance and warned that any driver who refuses to adhere to the new fares will be held accountable.
“We are here urging our drivers to comply with the new 15 percent fare reduction starting from tomorrow, Saturday. Though we know that certain factors such as spare parts and other items we buy as drivers have still not been reduced, we are reducing ours first so that nobody begins to blame us as usual. We have also ordered that our task force go out to ensure compliance by our drivers,” he stated.
Chairman Boakye also appealed to the government and relevant authorities to ensure that all other commercial vehicle operators, including ‘trotro’ and drivers not under GPRTU, also comply with the fare reduction. “We are giving this directive to our union members, hoping that the government will ensure compliance by the others. We can’t force these trotro drivers and the others since we know it is the duty of the government to ensure that,” he told journalists.
The chairman’s directive comes as part of efforts to ensure fairness and uniformity in public transportation charges following recent economic adjustments.
