Collins Nyamekye, a physically challenged man from New Suame, is accusing Jerry Bartoh Dartoh, a self-proclaimed chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) known as Chairman Jerry, of defrauding him of GH¢7,000 in a bogus DVLA job recruitment scheme.

Nyamekye alleges that Chairman Jerry approached him in 2020, during the NPP-led government, promising him a job at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) for a total fee of GH¢12,000. Believing the offer to be legitimate, Nyamekye made an initial payment of GH¢7,000.

Since then, Nyamekye says he has received neither the promised job nor a refund of his money. “I knew him because we are both NPP members. In 2020, he told me there was a job opening at DVLA and asked me to bring GH¢12,000 so he could secure it for me,” Nyamekye explained.

“He told me to first pay GH¢7,000 and that I could add the rest once the process was complete. I gave him the money, but he never secured the job for me. Since then, whenever I call him, he keeps giving different excuses, and eventually, he blocked me.”

Nyamekye’s frustration culminated in a dramatic confrontation with Chairman Jerry on Sompa TV’s “Sompa Nkomo,” a social program hosted by Oheneni Adazoa. He stated that despite repeated assurances, Jerry failed to honor his commitment. Nyamekye added that he had also contacted former government official Ibrahim Adeji, who also promised assistance, but nothing materialized.

Confronted live on air, Chairman Jerry acknowledged receiving the money and insisted he intended to repay it. “I know him, and I did take the money from him. I have been telling him the money will be paid, but my containers are locked up at the Tema Port,” he explained. “Once I clear them, I will have the money to pay him back. Why should I steal money from him? I have said that once I clear the containers, I will settle the debt.”

The alleged incident highlights the persistent problem of recruitment scams, and the growing desperation of job seekers in Ghana.
