Divert Cathedral Funds to Healthcare, Mahama Cares”- Ashanti Regional Minister Proposes:

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene has sparked debate by proposing that funds allocated for the controversial National Cathedral project be redirected to the Mahama Cares Initiative, a medical trust fund supporting individuals with chronic illnesses.
In a social media post on May 17, 2025, Dr. Amoakohene presented the idea as a motion for public consideration, writing: “I move that all donations to the National Cathedral be redirected to the Mahama Cares initiative to support critical needs. Against or for the motion?”
The Mahama Cares Initiative, introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to alleviate the financial burden of medical treatment and improve access to healthcare for individuals suffering from conditions like cancer, kidney failure, and heart disease.
Dr. Amoakohene’s proposal comes amid ongoing scrutiny and controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project, championed by the previous Akufo-Addo administration. The project has faced intense criticism regarding funding transparency, procurement practices, stalled construction, and concerns about long-term sustainability.
Reports indicate that over $58 million has already been spent on the project, with little visible progress. Additionally, debts remain outstanding to contractors and individuals whose properties were demolished to clear the land for the cathedral.
By suggesting the redirection of funds, Dr. Amoakohene has reignited the debate over the prioritization of national resources and the suitability of the National Cathedral project in the face of pressing healthcare needs.
