Ketu North Member of Parliament Edem Agbana has sharply criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of prioritizing media appearances over substantive action in response to the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.

Speaking on Metro TV’s “Good Morning Ghana” on May 15, 2025, Agbana sarcastically dubbed the NPP the “National Press Conferences Party,” highlighting what he sees as the party’s over-reliance on press briefings to advance its political agenda.

“You’ve held a number of press conferences on the suspension of the Chief Justice,” Agbana stated. “NPP has now become the National Press Conferences Party. Every day, every day holding a press conference saying President Mahama has breached the law in the suspension of the Chief Justice. Which of the law did he breach?”

Agbana’s comments come after a series of press conferences held by the NPP, in which the party accused President John Dramani Mahama of acting unlawfully in suspending Chief Justice Torkornoo. The NPP contends that the president violated constitutional provisions and undermined judicial independence by failing to follow due process.

However, Agbana argues that the NPP’s reaction is overly dramatic and politically driven, suggesting that the party is more interested in scoring political points than addressing the actual issues at hand.

President John Dramani Mahama suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo on April 22nd following the establishment of a prima facie case in response to three separate petitions seeking her removal from office. The decision, made in consultation with the Council of State, was taken in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution.
