The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a strict three-day ultimatum to the Kumawu constituency leadership, demanding they provide irrefutable evidence to support allegations of “tribal remarks” made by former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Dufour, or issue a full and public apology. The ultimatum stems from allegations surrounding the nomination of District Chief Executives (DCEs).

The youth wing strongly condemned the allegations, characterizing them as baseless, harmful, and disruptive to the NDC’s reputation, and citing the unrest they have sparked within the party.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mr. Frank Basoah, the National President of the Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus, vehemently defended Dr. Dufour against the accusations. He labeled the allegations a deliberate attempt to undermine Dr. Dufour’s credibility and potential as a leading candidate for the NDC’s 2028 flagbearer position, emphasizing that Dr. Dufour has consistently been a champion of unity and inclusivity within the party.

“These claims are completely false and unfounded,” Basoah declared. “Dr. Kwabena Dufour has long been known for promoting unity within the NDC, and there is absolutely no way he would make such hurtful and divisive comments. This is a calculated effort to discredit him.”

The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus is demanding swift action from the Kumawu constituency executives, stating they must either produce irrefutable evidence substantiating the alleged comments within three days, or issue a complete and unreserved public apology to Dr. Dufour. Basoah warned that failure to comply with these demands would result in decisive action by the youth caucus to defend Dr. Dufour’s reputation and protect the overall integrity of the NDC.

“If the Kumawu constituency leadership cannot substantiate these accusations, they must issue a full public apology to Dr. Dufour. If they fail to do so, we will not hesitate to take appropriate action,” Basoah warned sternly.

Further fueling the controversy, Basoah also called on key Kumawu constituency leaders, including Constituency Chairman Mr. Akwalakwagyi and NDC parliamentary candidate for 2024, Mr. Akwasi Amankwaah, also known as Tom C, to clarify their potential involvement in recent demonstrations organized by local NDC members in Kumawu. These demonstrations are reportedly linked to the allegations against Dr. Dufour.

“We call on the Chairman Akwalakwagyi and Mr. Tom C. to come forward and clarify their roles in the demonstrations in Kumawu. If they were aware of or involved in spreading these divisive allegations, they must address it openly and make their position clear,” Basoah urged.

The Ashanti Regional Youth Caucus has made it clear that they will not tolerate any attempts to damage Dr. Dufour’s reputation and will take all necessary steps to protect him from unfounded accusations.

As the three-day deadline rapidly approaches, all eyes are now focused on the response of the Kumawu constituency executives. Their actions, or lack thereof, could significantly impact the NDC’s internal unity and stability as the highly anticipated 2028 elections draw closer.
