Mother threatens suicide, legal action over sons’ wrongful arrest in MoMo vendor killings:
Wrongful arrests in MoMo vendor killings: Mother vows suicide, lawsuit unless police clear sons' names

A Kumasi mother, Mrs. Mary Kyei of Pankrono, has threatened to take drastic action, including suicide and legal proceedings, following the wrongful arrest of her three sons by the Ghana Police Service in connection with the recent mobile money (MoMo) vendor murders.
Mrs. Kyei alleges the arrests have caused immense distress and indelible damage to her family’s reputation.
According to Mrs. Kyei, her sons were mistakenly apprehended during a police operation targeting suspects in the MoMo vendor killings. Despite their subsequent release and the apprehension of other suspects, a video of their arrest has circulated widely, leading to severe stigmatization and job losses for her sons. The family now lives in fear, with the sons reluctant to leave their home due to public accusations.
“Now, the original suspects have been arrested and named by the regional police commander, while my children have been released as innocent,” Mrs. Kyei stated. “However, because they were videoed and headlined on social media, people now accuse all my three children as armed robbers.”
Mrs. Kyei is demanding a public statement from the Ashanti Regional Police clarifying her sons’ innocence and addressing the harm caused by their wrongful arrest. She also alleges that police officers extorted GH¢700 during the bail process. Failing a satisfactory response from the police, Mrs. Kyei says she and her family will proceed with legal action and are even contemplating suicide.
Kwabena Mensah, also known as Akupa, the youngest of the arrested sons, maintains that he and his brothers are innocent. He claims unfortunately for her, he was apprehended upon arriving at the police station to inquire about his brothers’ arrest.
