GNASSM’s Adu-Gyamfi urges miners to register, warns illegal operators in Ashanti Region:

The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners (GNASSM) is ramping up its efforts to formalize the mining sector with an Ashanti regional registration drive, a key part of its nationwide initiative.
Kicking off in the Amansie West zone, the 21-day exercise aims to distinguish legitimate miners from illegal operators, creating a more structured and sustainable industry.
While launching the campaign in Antoakrom, National Communications Director Razak Abdul Alhassan emphasized the registration’s role in identifying licensed operators, aspiring miners, and those needing land, to facilitate sector formalization.
He also addressed licensing disparities, where larger companies often access river bodies and forest reserves more easily than smaller miners, and reiterated GNASSM’s commitment to miners’ rights within the established legal framework since 1989.
However, Ashanti District Secretary Michael Adu-Gyamfi took a firm stance, highlighting the registration’s crucial role in improving monitoring and resource distribution to members. “We’re making registration easier than ever, and we urge all small-scale miners to come forward with proper identification,” Adu-Gyamfi stated. He then issued a stern warning: “This registration will help us identify those operating illegally, especially in our forests and water bodies.
We will work with authorities to ensure they face the full force of the law.” Registration points will be established across various zones to streamline the process.
Adding to the urgency, Amansie West Zone Chairman Joseph Mensah encouraged members to seize the registration opportunity. He detailed the team’s upcoming stops, including Moseaso, Manso Nkwanta, and Mpatuam, ensuring comprehensive coverage within the zone.
The initiative is already receiving positive feedback, with registered members praising the effort and urging widespread participation. This registration drive represents a significant step towards a more organized, responsible, and sustainable small-scale mining industry in Ghana, while simultaneously cracking down on illegal activities.
