In a stunning upset that signals a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has captured the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat for the first time ever.

The Electoral Commission (EC) officially declared Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC candidate, as the winner of the fiercely contested race in the 2024 general elections.

Akurugu secured a narrow but decisive victory, garnering 50,967 votes, while her opponent, Mike Oquaye Jr. of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 50,669 votes. The razor-thin margin underscores the intensity of the contest and the political weight of this landmark win.

Dome Kwabenya, a constituency long considered an NPP stronghold and previously held by Sarah Adwoa Safo since 2012, has now fallen to the NDC. This historic victory represents a major breakthrough for the party and a significant setback for the NPP.

Akurugu’s win reflects a broader trend observed in the 2024 elections, where the NDC has demonstrated significant gains in constituencies previously viewed as NPP strongholds.

The NDC’s victories in Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi, among others, along with this Dome Kwabenya victory, suggest a significant shift in voter sentiment and a potential realignment of political power across the country. The win is significant for the NDC and could have a considerable impact on national

politics.
