The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it has gazetted the results of the 2024 presidential election showing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia with 38.2% of the vote and John Dramani Mahama with 57.7%.

The claims were shared by several prominent figures associated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), including Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, Joyce Bawah Motgari, and Beatrice Annan.

However, the EC has dismissed these assertions, stating that the figures being circulated are not consistent with their official gazetting process for presidential election results. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the EC, clarified in a statement to Fact-Check Ghana that while the EC has indeed gazetted the presidential election results, the online figures are inaccurate.

“It’s false. We only state the candidate who got more than 50% of the votes,” said Dr. Asare. “This one is fake. We only gazette and say Kwaku [as an example] was the one who got more than 50 per cent of the votes.”

Dr. Asare further explained that the EC has historically gazetted the results by only indicating the candidate who surpassed the 50% threshold, as mandated by Ghana’s Constitution.

He clarified that detailed numerical results are only published for parliamentary elections.
